Refreshing, Healing Aloe Vera
Odds are, you either have your very own aloe vera plant, or you’ve had one at some point. This succulent is easy to keep and is one of the most widely-used medicinal plants on the planet. Any time I burnt myself as a kid, or had a sunburn, my mother reached for our aloe plant, broke a piece off, and smeared the cool gel on to my skin.
Aloe vera has been known for its healing properties for at least 6,000 years.
“In the early days, the plant was known for being a ‘plant of immortality’ and was presented to Egyptian pharaohs as a funeral gift. Over time, groups from many geographical areas have used aloe vera, including Indians, Chinese, Mexicans, and North Americans, too.” (Everyday Health).
Aloe is a known healing emollient and moisturizer and for treating skin injuries, but did you know it has other medicinal properties as well? Aloe vera contains various antioxidant compounds which help inhibit the growth of some bacteria that can cause infections. And, there is some evidence that it can actually help slow aging of the skin.
Aloe vera gel is also an anti inflammatory and has even been promoted and used by patients for the treatment of a range of inflammatory digestive and skin diseases - including inflammatory bowel disease.
And, according to Medical News Today, aloe can also help reduce dental plaque (when used as a mouth rinse), can help heal canker sores, can help reduce constipation, and can even lower blood sugar levels. What a plant!!!
