5 Reasons to Love Sandalwood Aromatherapy
Share the love!
Aromatherapy, also known as essential oil therapy, provides numerous benefits for healing and relaxation. One of our favorite aromatherapy scents is sandalwood, which comes from mature “Santalum album,” or East Indian sandalwood trees. It has a long history in ancient cultures for its scent and health benefits, which are some of the reasons we also love sandalwood.
However, there are a ton more reasons to love sandalwood aromatherapy. Read on to learn more about the benefits of sandalwood aromatherapy.
1) The sandalwood scent itself is amazing
Sandalwood is a deep, woody scent and often smells like a mix of floral, rich, balsamic, soft, and sweet accents. Because of its great scent, it is often used a base note in many iconic perfumes and colognes.
2) There are so many different blends of sandalwood oils
Various blends of sandalwood essential oils have different undertones and different emphases on its benefits, but no matter what sandalwood blend you use--you’ll still reap all the benefits of sandalwood aromatherapy. Heliotrope SF has a few of our favorite sandalwood essential oil blends. They have a basic Sandalwood essential oil that serves as a sedative and decongestant with wood, floral, and honey notes. Other brands of basic sandalwood essential oils that we love include PipingRock’s Sandalwood Essential Oil Blend and Rocky Mountain Oils’s Sandalwood Essential Oil.
If you’re hoping to explore different sandalwood blends, Heliotrope has other unique blends including their Essential Oil Blend Meditative (Sandalwood Myrrh), which includes a blend of oils including Frankincense, and Essential Oil Blend Nostalgic (Bay Laurel Sandalwood), which is more of a spicy scent that’s ideal for meditation.
3) Sandalwood aromatherapy has calming and relaxing properties to ease your brain waves
Sandalwood is known to calm your mind and body and put you in a meditative state where you can find inner peace. Because of these properties, it is known to be a natural healing option for those who may have anxiety, nervousness, and depression. It is, however, also used by those who simply want to have mental clarity and feel relaxed and at peace after the hustle and bustle of their busy lives.
4) Sandalwood aromatherapy provides other physical health benefits, too!
Besides calming your mind, sandalwood aromatherapy is known to have sedative effects that are perfect for those with insomnia. Because of these sedative effects it can also be used to treat headaches and migraines. If you want to try using the sandalwood essential oil by itself, you can add it to your bathtub for a relaxing, richly scented bath or apply it to your body as an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent.
5) You can get all the benefits of sandalwood without any irritation to your skin
Sandalwood aromatherapy allows you to take in all the benefits of sandalwood essential oil without the worry. Although sandalwood essential oil can be used on all different skin types, you may still experience irritation with direct application of this oil to your skin. Aromatherapy allows you to enjoy the relaxing experience without coming in direct contact with the oil. There are a ton of beautiful diffusers you can use for aromatherapy, but our favorite is the Bottle Humidifier/Diffuser from Heliotrope SF. It serves as both a humidifier and diffuser so you can get the benefits of both in one product. Its simple white design makes it the perfect diffuser for any household.
Because there are so many synthetic products in the market, look for sandalwood essential oils with high levels of santalol, specifically around 90%, to ensure that you are truly gaining the benefits of sandalwood aromatherapy. As a consumer, it is important to note that the benefits of sandalwood aromatherapy are not extensively studied scientifically. However, traditional religious and medicinal uses coupled with the public’s experiences with sandalwood aromatherapy tell us that there are real benefits to this practice.
