Non-binary Skin Care
Merriam-Webster describes non-binary as:
* not restricted to two things or parts
* of, relating to, or being a system of numbers that does not use 2 as its base
* relating to or being a person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that is neither entirely male nor entirely female
You may be used to seeing skin and hair care products packaged and labeled in a very binary fashion: “for her” or “for him.” Or, it may be just that the colors of the bottles or branding reinforce the notion that the product is meant for a specific gender (usually male OR female).
Often, the only difference in a product geared towards a certain gender is the fragrance added.
Recently, a makeup brand geared towards men called “War Paint” really took its marketing to the extreme with a hyper-masculine campaign. Twitter users quickly called the company out, with comments about “fragile masculinity” and how it was “specifically formulated for LEATHER TOUGH MAN SKIN.” Vox recaps the reaction to the product in this article.
In this article by Refinery29 about “gender neutral” beauty products, the author discusses the evolution of the beauty market - from initially solely marketing to cisgender women (note: cisgender refers to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex) “18 to 36 years old...with a household income of $70-150K, and controlled the purchasing decisions of her husband” to “everyone, including cis women, cis men, and transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary, and gender-fluid individuals.”
