What Makes Essential Oils Essential?

Did you know that adding essential oils to your hair care routine can not only strengthen and lengthen your hair, but might even improve sleep and reduce stress? Using natural hair care products is a great start — most conventional products use synthetic ingredients or even detergents that can leave your hair and scalp completely imbalanced. Going one step further and adding essential oils to your natural hair care routine will leave you with noticeably healthier, happier hair.

Choosing which essential oils to use can seem daunting. That’s why we curated this guide to help you take control over your hair health. Everyone deserves to feel good in their skin and hair, so let’s help you find the perfect, personalized solution for your locks.

The Many Benefits Of Essential Oils

Our relationship to our hair is just as unique as we are. Lifestyle, genetics, environment, and more play a huge role in the health, durability, and thickness of each strand. Everyone’s hair weathers over time and that process speeds up with overuse of hair dryers, straighteners, curlers, repeated coloring, and more.

That’s where essential oils come in. Adding essential oils to your scalp and hair will include a host of benefits. They seal in moisture, balance your head’s natural oils, soothe the scalp, reduce inflammation and itchiness, fight dandruff, condition your hair, make it look more vibrant, and add a natural perfume scent. Pretty great, right?

In a nutshell, essential oils are highly concentrated liquid plant extracts. They are made by distilling concentrated oils from real herbs, flowers, and plants. Every essential oil has its own unique healing properties. Some nourish hair roots and stimulate growth, while others fight itchy scalp conditions or infections.

You may feel adverse to putting oil on your hair at first. You may have never tried it because you thought it would make your hair too oily. Believe it or not, the right amount and type of essential oils will actually make your hair healthier and happier. Essential oils are a must try if you have dry hair or greasy hair, and especially if you have an itchy skin condition on your scalp. The bottom line? Essential oils are sure to give anyone’s hair health a boost, while nourishing hair roots.

How To Use Essential Oils In Your Hair

One of the easiest ways to incorporate essential oils into your natural hair care routine is to add some to your shampoo and conditioner. For an 8oz bottle, you should add about 20 drops of essential oil. Try choosing oils that enhance the natural hair care products you are already using. For example, if you are using our Olive Leaf Protective Shampoo, try adding an essential oil that has an aromatic smell and addresses any issues you might be having. The olive oil helps cleanse and condition, promoting shiny hair and healthy growth. If you struggle with scalp itchiness or acne, try adding lavender and/or lemon essential oil to your shampoo.

Essential oils are all natural and quite powerful. It's important to use them safely and follow instructions when using natural hair care products. Some oils can provoke skin irritation and it’s always a good bet to dilute them in a carrier oil (they do not dilute in water). But first, perform a patch test before using essential oils for the first time. Apply a drop of oil onto a small patch of skin. If no irritation occurs then the oil is safe to use topically, after you’ve diluted it.

Regular, weekly use of a face mask can do wonders to deeply hydrate and cleanse your face. Why not try one for your hair? Another amazing way to use essential oils is to make a hair mask before you shower. There are many all-natural recipes you can find online, but the magic formula is to dilute your chosen essential oil with a carrier cream or oil. Coconut oil is a popular carrier to mix with essential oils because it has vitamin E, lauric acid, and capric acid -— all of which help strengthen hair and protect it from damage caused by environmental factors.

Try mixing 1-2 ripe avocados, 1 tbsp of coconut oil, and 10 drops of essential oil. If the avocados are too much for you, try mixing 1-2 tbsp of coconut or olive oil with 5 drops of essential oil. Add this mixture to your scalp and hair, massage it gently with your fingers, put on a shower cap for 30 minutes, and then wash it out in the shower with your normal shampoo. You’ll likely be able to get away with skipping the conditioner but it depends on your hair.

Trying using essential oils in your hair consistently for at least six months and consider giving yourself a scalp massage each time you use them. Part your hair and apply the mixture in sections. Press your fingers firmly into your scalp, rotating slowly and moving the skin across your skull. Feel the moisture sink in, focus on being mindful, and breathe in the aromas for a fully invigorating mind and body experience. Essential oils are known for calming the mind, too!

Lemon is known for its clean, citrus scent and antiseptic properties. If you have oily hair or an acne prone scalp, lemon essential oil is good for balancing oils and preventing infections. It helps cleanse the scalp, removing dead skin, dirt, and dandruff.

It soothes damaged skin and unclogs hair follicles with a cool feel. Tea tree essential oil treats dandruff, scalp itch, acne, infections, and inflammation. It can also help prevent hair loss and protect hair from damage. To treat dandruff, add a few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo and massage into your hair. For regrowth, mix with coconut or almond oil. Always make sure to avoid your eyes and wash out this oil after about 20 minutes.

Many people like cedar for its antifungal, antibacterial properties and woody yet fruity scent. Cedar essential oil stimulates hair follicles, increases circulation, combats hair thinning, and helps fight dandruff. It balances oil secretion from the sebaceous glands, which makes this natural hair care product perfect for dry or oily scalps. Woodsy scents appeal to those who shy away from florals.
