Get Into the (Skin Care) Groove

Get Into the (Skin Care) Groove

With all of the different products and advice and opinions on skin care, it can be confusing on where to start when it comes to a skin care regime. And when we say “regime”, we realize that sounds a bit...extreme…so let’s call it a “groove”. What steps should you take to be the most helpful to your face skin care? What should your skin care routine look like?

It’s our intention in this blog to break it down and simplify it, so that skin care doesn’t seem daunting or overly complicated. Here are our suggestions for a groove that will make your skin happy, moisturized, and the healthiest it can be.

Step One: Cleanse/Exfoliate

A good, all-natural skin cleanser is your best friend. Cleansing your skin on a regular basis keeps it looking and feeling healthy and hydrated. When you cleanse your skin, you are removing excess make-up, skin cells, dirt, oils, and bacteria that has accumulated on your skin. “The rule [for washing your face] is to use common sense: Always wash your face after a workout to prevent breakouts, and wash excessively oily skin morning and night. For very dry or sensitive skin, stick to cleansing once daily in the evening.” (Marie Claire)

What kind of cleanser should you use? We recommend all-natural cleansers (of course!) and carry a few different types. Our Aloe and Lavender Facial Cleanser, approved by the Organic Trade Association, is a fresh, natural cleanser that’s perfect for all skin types, with gentle and effective botanicals that moisturize and protect your skin. Our Citrus and Fruit Acid Cleanser harnesses the exfoliating and cell generating power of fruit acids, leaving skin supple and younger looking. With its antiseptic and astringent benefits, it is perfect for those with oily or acne prone skin. Our Mineral and Botanical Cleanser contains botanicals with anti-inflammatory properties, including centipeda cunninghamii extract, an Australian herb that has been used for centuries to treat various skin conditions. It’s a  great choice for sensitive or normal skin types.

Two to three times a week, you may choose to exfoliate your skin as well. Any more often than that and you can strip natural oils and cause irritation. Skin exfoliating removes the dead skin cells. “According to the American Academy of Dermatology, exfoliation can leave your skin looking brighter and improve the effectiveness of topical skin care products by enhancing absorption.” (Glamour)

Our Walnut and Ginger and Ginger Exfoliating Soap does double duty. While ginger and lemongrass naturally clean, ground walnut shells gently exfoliate. Or, try our Walnut and Botanical Exfoliating Wash which soothes, gently exfoliates, promotes elasticity and seals in moisture.

Step Two: Tone

Facial toner is meant to be used after washing your face but before using your moisturizer or serum. “Face toners prep the skin for moisturizers and serum while getting rid of excess excess oil and stubborn dirt or makeup leftover on your face after you wash it...But they're not a replacement for washing your face. Just think of facial toners as the extra credit rather than the shortcut of your skin-care routine.” (Women’s Health)

Try our Lavender and Willow Refreshing Toner spray that delivers micro-molecules of healing lavender essential oil and astringent willow bark extract. You can spray it on after washing or shaving (or before bedtime, and even during the day over makeup). Additional botanicals help revive tired and dry skin, while zinc helps fight blemishes. Our Rosemary and Bergamot Astringent Toner is strong yet gentle. Bergamot oil cleanses and extracts bacteria from the skin, while rosemary oil helps strengthen the capillaries and has a rejuvenating effect.

Step Three: Moisturize

Moisturizing can help keep your skin clear, smooth, and wrinkle-free. It can help your skin repair itself and stay younger looking. Heliotrope offers several deeply penetrating face moisturizers, vitamin-rich face creams, and soothing serums to choose from.

Our Face serums, like our popular Cucumber and Botanical Healing Serum and Frankincense and Rose Geranium Oil Serum, leverage skin-friendly botanicals that promote healing and combat wrinkles. Serums can soothe blemishes and help relieve dryness and irritation. Our face creams use natural ingredients to protect skin against environmental damage and signs of aging. Use our Shea Butter and Pomegranate Face Cream regularly to restore elasticity, resiliency, and improve the texture of your skin. Try our Organic Watermelon, Acai & Goji Face Cream - it hydrates, protects, and nourishes.

Read this Good Housekeeping article on what happens if you skip the moisturizing step.

Cleanse, Tone, Moisture - that’s your groove. When you follow these three steps, and use all-natural products, your skin will look and feel its best. Plan a visit to Heliotrope and we will help you pick out the perfect products for you and you skin so that your groove is the grooviest it can be!
